Boy Scouts join Hawaii Foodbank for 6th Annual Canstruction!

BOY SCOUTS JOIN HAWAII FOODBANK TO INAUGURATE

SCOUTING FOR FOOD DRIVE AT SIXTH ANNUAL CANSTRUCTION®

-- Oahu’s scouts will deliver canned foods to Pearlridge Centeron Oct. 1 during annual Canstruction® display --

Honolulu, HI (Aug. 16, 2011) – The Aloha Council Boy Scouts of America has joined with the Hawaii Foodbank to develop the Scouting for Food program in conjunction with AIA Honolulu’s Sixth Annual Canstruction® competition at Pearlridge Center.

Scouts who collect at least 100 cans to donate to the Foodbank will receive the inaugural Scouting for Food patch.

The Hawaii Foodbank will accept the Scouts’ canned food donations on Saturday, Oct. 1 between noon and 3 p.m. where the Canstruction® structures will be on display in Pearlridge’s Uptown Center Court.

The Boy Scouts’ donations will be immediately recorded by the Foodbank, and the scout will then use his cans to vote for his favorite of the Canstruction® structures. (During the course of the Canstruction® display, members of the public are encouraged to participate in the People’s Choice Food Drive by visiting Canstruction® and bringing canned food donations to Pearlridge to support Hawaii’s hungry families. The structure that receives the most votes from members of the public [one can equaling one vote] will be named People’s Choice Award winner.)

“With the Scouting for Food drive, the Aloha Council of Boy Scouts seeks to bring the enthusiasm of 19,000 scouts to help feed some of the 183,000 hungry in our community,” says architect Mary Bueche, volunteer chairperson for the Scouting for Food drive and den leader for Pack 326 in Pearl City. “The Boy Scouts had helped out with Canstruction® in previous years, so the Scouting for Food drive is the culmination of a number of years of partnership with AIA Honolulu and the Hawaii Foodbank.”

“We are excited about and thankful for the Scouting for Food drive and Canstruction®, which will make a huge contribution to feeding Hawaii’s hungry,” says Polly Kauahi, director of development for the Hawaii Foodbank. “Canned goods are in great demand at the foodbank; we ran out of canned foods twice this year already.”

About Canstruction
